Ingrid Groiss at de Burgh

Ingrid Groiss

Ingrid and Weinviertal
Weinviertal or “wine quarter”, is Austria’s largest wine region. It is situated at the far northeastern part of Austria, bordering the Czech Republic in the north and Slovakia to the east. It is a beautiful area with neat villages and picture postcard vineyards. It is also known for the hundreds of metres of cellars that run underground called “Kellergrassen”. The region’s most famous grape variety – Gruner Veltliner is king here and is characterized by its zesty flavours, delicate aromas and tart acidity.

After a slightly dodgy wine scandal (it’s worth a google if you don’t know the story) in the 80’s, Austria has seemingly recovered fully because it is now one of the most exciting wine producing countries in the world.

Ingrid Groiss describes herself as passionate, emotional and determined. It pretty much says it all about Ingrid and are the sort of character traits we would expect to find in a young wine maker, who modernised their parent’s winery. Having lived the corporate life with Coca-Cola in her younger years, Ingrid returned to her wine making roots in Weinviertel and set about producing fantastic wines from the vineyards her Grandmother had planted some 50 years ago. Ingrid’s wines have a great purity to them and the complexity of her Gruner Veltliners are quite amazing. The wines are all certified organic since the 2019 vintage and they get better with every vintage. We are all such big fans of Ingrid and her wines. It’s a real pleasure being an importer and supplier of such a dynamic winemaker.

Groiss Weinviertel Gruner Veltliner

Fantastic value Austrian Gruner Veltliner from Ingrid Groiss which should really be savoured but is far too drinkable. From Weinviertel this is a zippy, crisp, refreshing and aromatic wine with apple blossom, pear and quince flavours and wrapped around a lovely citric core. Beautifully pure on the finish and showing those characteristic white pepper and herbal notes.

Groiss Rose Ried Hasenhaide

Hasenhaide means “garden of the hares” which is the name of the vineyard that Ingrid Groiss’s sublime Rose comes from. The wine is a blend of Pinot Noir & Zweigelt. We love the delicate salmon pink and seductive nose of fresh strawberries and ripe cherries. The juicy fruit on the palate marries beautifully with a stony minerality that gives the wine great freshness. It goes without saying that we are massive fans of Ingrid and her wines and we are so pleased to bring the Rose into our ever growing range.

Gemischter Satz is a traditional Austrian wine that is made from a field blend of numerous different grape varieties all grown together in a single vineyard. In a world where single varietals rule supreme, this is the blend to end all other blends. The result is one of the most refreshing and delightful wines we’ve tried. It’s effortlessly brilliant and proves that variety and a little bit of everything really is the spice of life. Click here to find out more info on the grape varieties…

On the palate it is tight and powerful with lively acidity and elegant spiciness that keeps going through a long finish. Aged for 11 months on its lees.

Magical wine made from 100% Gruner Veltliner in the ‘Pankraz’ vineyard which is made up of sand, marl lime and conglomerate soils. 70% of the grapes are gently pressed without stems and fermented with natural yeasts. The remaining 30% of the grapes are destemmed but remain whole and are fermented in old 500 litre Austrian oak barrels. The wine is then aged for 11 months on its lees. The result is quite remarkable with a complex nose, herby, grapefruit and peachy flavours. It has a moreish and mouth-watering acidity with citrus and white flower notes. Can be drunk with roasted or braised white meats as well as spicy dishes. Really top stuff.
