The Best Wines for Summer 2023
With summer upon us, it is time to scrape the rust off the BBQ and stock up on some delicious wines to see you through those hazy summer days. With so many to choose from here are our top picks.
Light Italian whites excel when the pace of life slows. Fiano ‘Janare’ La Guardiense from the Campania region is blessed with lemon, peach and pear fruit flavours. It is best appreciated from a near-horizontal position on a sun lounger.
Sauvignon Blanc takes on a new life in summer when crisp green salads, ripe tomatoes and goats’ cheese become abundant. Bordeaux in France is having a quiet resurgence and is producing some excellent examples just now like Chateau La Verriere Sauvignon Blanc which has lovely refreshing minerality behind the vibrant exotic green fruit. Works best with designer sunglasses.
Of course, a season isn’t a season without a trend. Spain’s Albarino is currently “having a moment” so if you want to ride this wave then Albarino Boal de Arousa is the one for you. It is a beautiful example of this Galician speciality and is bursting with maritime-influenced joy along with intense peach and grapefruit notes. It is a delicious aperitif and excellent with shellfish and this season must have; a herringbone garden rug.
If trends pass you by and you just want vinous joy, then you’ll love Ingrid Groiss Gruner Veltliner from Austria and Sybille Kuntz Riesling Qba from the Mosel in Germany. Ingrid’s Gruner is beautifully made with zippy, aromatic fruit. Sybille’s Riesling displays green apples and intense lime notes. Both are benchmark examples and go with whatever you want because you are past all that nonsense.
Pink wines come into their own over the summer months and there are few better than Bruno Andreu’s ‘Elixir’ Rose from the south of France which is packed with vibrant summer red berry flavours. It is the perfect accompaniment to beachwear and is best served in a hot tub.
Lighter reds are called for and there are none better than Jean-Paul Brun ‘Le Ronsay’ Beaujolais which has all the juicy charm and strawberry fruit you’ll need for the summer. Delightful when paired with happy vibes.
