It doesn’t happen often, but I was sitting in a beer garden the other day with a couple of mates wasting time, adding calories and people watching, when a Range Rover pulled up in the car park. “A rare, completed journey”, quipped Stuart. “I bet he’s got labradors” I responded.
As the door opened and a gentleman emerged, resplendent in full kit, head to toe country wear, there was a knowing nod between the three of us. As the boot opened, manually, the electric fob was obviously broken, out jumped two labs, one young and one older. “What wine does he drink then?” Al asked. With Bordeaux on the edge of my lips, I hesitated, my attention had drifted away from the gentleman to the two dogs who bounded around with whimsical grace, before setting off on the scent of something. “Red Burgundy” I replied. Wild and lively in their youth but warm and kind with age.
There’s the old saying that dogs and owners’ personalities are similar, but it got me thinking about what your dog says about your wine choice. Might be true, probably not, but let us know…
Cocker Spaniel
With its long, silky ears and cheerful demeanour, the cocker is the smallest of the gun dogs with a reputation for loyalty and intelligence. A plucky and cheeky character that punches above its weight and won’t let you down, like a fine Beaujolais.
Jean Paul Brun Beaujolais ‘le Ronsay’ 2023
Domaine de la Madone Fleurie 2023
English Springer Spaniel
For the outdoor types who love to get muddy. Boundless energy and enthusiasm like Mencia grown high up in Bierzo by farmers who aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty.
Bodegas Mengoba ‘Brezo’ Mencia 2023
Bull dogs
Bizarrely popular dogs that look like something went wrong during their creation. One for the natural wine camp, you know, the types that look for unconventional beauty.
Jean Christophe Mandard ‘L’Orbois’ 2023
Sybille Kuntz Riesling Qba Trocken 2023
Domaine Sainte Croix Le Fournas 2021
Staffordshire Bull Terrier
Gets a bad press and when treated badly can be aggressive and unpleasant, but when handled properly with love and care they can be sociable, fun loving and beautiful, much like a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.
Border Terrier
Sociable, playful and perfectly adaptable to an urban or rural environment. Dependable and cheeky, they go with everything and are like by everyone. An Argentinean Malbec vibe going on.
Atamisque ‘Serbal’ Malbec 2024
Las Estelas ‘Leticia’ Malbec del Valle’
Rottweiler
Strong, active and intelligent dogs that have always portrayed a macho imagine, more closely associated with security than domestic life. Elegant yet robust and powerful like the full bodied, masculine wines of Ribera del Duero.
Hungarian Vizsla
Elegantly bonkers dog that craves human attention. Like a feisty lover they will give you no end of pleasure and drive you to the edge of madness in equal measures. This sounds more Bordeaux than the classic country gentleman.
Chateau La Verriere Bordeaux Rouge Bordeaux Superier 2021
Chateau Herve Laroque Fronsac 2015
Chateau Beau Site St Estephe 2018
