Domaine Les Trois Toits Muscadet Sevre et Maine Sur Lie 'Phileas' 2023
Les Trois Toits Muscadet Sevre et Maine Sur Lie 'Phileas' is a wonderfully modern expression of the Melon de Bourgogne grape variety. Lovely citrus notes are perfectly balanced with warmer fruit flavours of peach and dried stone fruit. Yeasty, autolytic flavours of brioche and nuts come through which enhances the aromatic complexity of the wine and makes for a marvellous drinking experience. There is a creamy texture to the palate which has wonderful salinity and roundness.
The grapes are sourced from the Domaine’s best terroir which is on gneiss and mica-schist soils from the hill of La Louee and undergoes 20 months lees aging in concrete tanks.
Domaine Les Trois Toits was purchased in 2019 by Vincent Barbier and Cecile Perraud who, in the short period they have owned the Domaine, have started the conversion to organic farming, removed mechanical harvesting and begun fermenting with indigenous yeasts. They produce a modern range of wines that encapsulate the brilliance of this classic terroir but also push the boundaries by de-classifying some of their wines to Vin de France so they can experiment with different grape varieties, vinification techniques and have more freedom over ageing periods. They are our kind of winery and people – classic but not scared to be different.
The winery is a classic stone building with “Trois Toits” or three roofs and is located just east of Vertou, which sits southeast of Nantes. The soils here are mainly Schist with some areas of Gneiss, considered the prize terroir for the Melon de Bourgogne grape. These mineral rich soils help produce wines of intense flavour and striking freshness, which perfectly symbolise the face of New Wave Muscadet.
