Vina Real Rioja La Virgen AKA Pagos de Vina Real is a fantastically unique expression of Rioja made from 100% Tempranillo from a 40-year-old, 2-hectare vineyard called La Virgen. The wine is dominated by forest fruits, blueberries, redcurrants and hints of liquorice. The wine spends 12 months in French oak which adds lovely smoked aromas, cloves and touches of toffee. It is a layered wine with freshness, structure and tension. A delicious modern Rioja .

Vina Real started back in the early 1920s and is part of the larger CVNE group. Its name came from the vineyard’s proximity to the old Camino Real, an ancient highway used by pilgrims for centuries. A new state of the art winery was built in 2004 in Laguardia which wraps itself around the Cerro de la Mesa hills. It is quite a sight and up there with the coolest wineries around. It is symbolic of the wines themselves which seamlessly blend the modern with the traditional.
