Meerlust Rubicon is a stunning, world class Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot from Stellenbosch in South Africa. It is a wine that always excites and is irresistible in its youth but will reward anyone who can keep their hands off it and age it for 30 years. It is an intense and rich wine with wonderfully exotic plum, cassis and black cherry fruit. There are classic Cabernet flavours of cedar smoke, cigar box and liquorice along with classic vanilla and mulberry fruit. The 2014 has beautifull spiced notes and is in a lovely place right now. It is a joyful wine and needs to be drunk from magnum.
Meerlust is one of South Africa’s greatest wine producers and has been owned by the Myburgh family since 1756. Situated 15km’s south of Stellenbosch on a granite outcrop, 5km’s from False Bay, the estate benefits from cooling breezes and evening mists which provide the perfect conditions for growing premium grapes. Hannes is the 8th generation of his family to run the estate and was instrumental in establishing Rubicon as one of the world’s greatest fine wines. The estate pioneered Bordeaux varietals in the Cape in the late 1970’s and it is fitting that Rubicon remains one of the Capes greatest red wines and also, arguably, the best value fine wine in the world.
