Bodegas Rey Fernando de Castilla is a relatively young Bodegas which was started in 1972 by Fernando Andrada-Vanderwilde who took over some old sherry and brandy soleras from a couple of local bodegas. In 1999 Jan Pettersen, a Norwegian with 15 years experience at Osborne, bought the company and concentrated on producing high quality, complex Sherries. The Antique Palo Cortado is one of the greatest expressions of Sherry. It starts it's life as a Fino or Amontillado, aged under flor which disappears for some reason. The Sherry is then fortified to 20% abv and continues to develop as a Oloroso. The resulting Sherry is complex and has elements of both an Amontillado (Tangy nuttyness) and an Oloroso (Smoky richness). All of Fernando de Castilla wines are unfiltered.
