Domaine Papagiannakos 'Erythros' Agiorgitiko 2021
Both the indigenous Agiorgitiko and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are sourced from old vines grown in the clay-rich soils of gently sloping vineyards in the Peloponnese, at an altitude of around 300m. Each grape variety is vinified separately, with a 5-day pre-fermentation cold soak followed by a 15-day fermentation process at controlled temperatures. After six months of maturation in new French oak barrels, the two wines are carefully blended to create a harmonious expression.
On the nose, this wine reveals sweetly ripe aromas of dark black and red fruits. The palate is rich and layered, with blackcurrant from the Cabernet Sauvignon complemented by the deep, bramble fruit character of the Agiorgitiko. The wine is finely structured, with remarkably approachable tannins and a subtle touch of well-integrated French oak. A light savoury note and a twist of liquorice round out the finish, leaving a lasting impression. This would go wonderfully with steak, or try it with lamb-stuffed peppers for a truly delightful Greek combination.
Domaine Papagiannakos, a historic estate rooted in the Attica region, was founded in 1919 near Athens, just 30km from the shadow of the Acropolis. Now in its third generation, Vassilis Papagiannakos continues to lead the estate, focusing on indigenous varieties like Savatiano and Malagouzia. With a deep respect for tradition, Vassilis champions the expressiveness of old vines and the unique terroir of the region. At the same time, the estate embraces innovation and sustainability through its modern winery practices and since 2007, their state of the art bioclimatic winery was completed saving energy in the wine-making process and is built to allow gravity to move wine from one part to another. They have moved to lighter weight bottles, use electric vehicles and are taking steps to reduce their CO2 output as much as possible over the years to come.
