Domaine Meyer Fonne was founded in the late 1800’s by Felix Meyer and is still run by Felix’s great grandson, also Felix. The Domaine now covers 12 hectares over 7 communes, namely Katzenthal, Ammerschwihr, Ingersheim, Riquewihr, Kientzheim, Colmar and Bennwihr. Within this is a great diversity of soil types and exposure which suits different grape varieties and is one of France’s greatest examples of terrior. The Domaine is organic in everything but name and Felix also uses a few Biodynamic techniques. Felix also prefers to use large, older foudres (wooden barrels) in conjunction with stainless steel vats for the more aromatic varieties. This gives the wines a delicacy and complexity which is unique to the area.
Meyer Fonne’s Cremant d’Alsace is a truly fantastic traditional method sparkling wine from one of Alsace’s leading biodynamic producers. It is made in the 'Methode Champenoise' way with the second fermentation taking place in bottle. Whilst the winemaking process is the same, it is a more youthful wine, only really spending around a year on its lees. The result being, fewer creamy brioche flavours, but it leaves the wine more fresh, lively and strikingly aromatic. Tropical fruit are more prevalent here with pineapple, glazed stone fruits and mango flavours. Hints of hazelnuts and sweet spice conclude beautifully on the palate.
