Chateau Langoa Barton 2018 St-Julien
The gravel-rich soils of Saint-Julien impart a distinct minerality and robust structure to its wines, while the temperate oceanic climate fosters the gradual ripening of grapes, allowing them to develop rich and complex flavors. Aromas of blackcurrant, plum, and dark cherry, layered with hints of cedar, tobacco, and earthy undertones on the nose. The palate is full-bodied and well-balanced, with ripe tannins and flavors that echo the dark fruits, complemented by nuances of smoke, liquorice, mocha and a touch of clove spice. The finish is long and layered, showcasing the wine's complexity and depth, a testament to the exceptional terroir of Saint-Julien.
Château Langoa-Barton, a Third Classified Growth, was the first of two Bordeaux estates acquired by Hugh Barton in the 1820s; the second being Château Léoville-Barton, a Second Classified Growth. Hugh Barton descended from an Irish family that settled in Bordeaux during the 18th century and established a prominent presence in the region's wine trade. Both estates remain under family ownership, representing the longest continuous lineage of ownership in the Médoc. Following the passing of Anthony Barton in 2022, his daughter Lilian and grandson Damien Barton have assumed leadership of the estates.
