Fruitière Vinicole d’Arbois Arbois Trousseau is a lovely example of this quite unique grape. It is a medium bodied wine with spicy notes and very alluring and elegant bright red fruit and earth aromas. It is the same variety as Bastardo on the Iberian Peninsula but no-one has a foggy how it ended up in Jura!
The Fruitière Vinicole d’Arbois co-operative is one of the oldest in France having been established in 1906. Its creation came in the wake of Europe’s devastating phylloxera outbreak which nearly wiped out France’s vineyards. 26 growers from Arbois decided to work together to make a stand against inferior wines being produced without a designated origin. They were so successful that it eventually lead to the creation of France’s first Appellation d’Origine Controlee (AOC) and the rest as they say is history. In 1969 the co-operative purchased Chateau Bethanie which is located in the heart of Arbois and equipped with modern wine making facilities. They are a great introduction to the areas unique wines.
