Contino Rioja Vina del Olivo is one of Rioja’s most celebrated wines. It has an elegant complexity and richness which is evident from the first smell. The layers of red fruit are beyond joyful with its immediate appeal but behind this are layers of oak and spice notes which are quite mesmerising. Balsamic notes, liquorice, herbal, mint, Asian spice and smoke all come through along with darker fruit on the palate which has a fine structure. The Vina del Olivo plot is located around an 800 year old olive tree within the Contino estate and enjoys optimum conditions for the production of the best grapes within the vineyard. If you love Rioja, you have to try this!

Contino is a pioneering, 62ha estate that was established in 1973 as the first single estate Rioja. Its creation marked a significant step towards the idea of terroir in Rioja, a notion that was overlooked at the time. The Contino estate is based on the concept of a Bordeaux style Chateau with its own surrounding vineyards rather than a winery that bought grapes from several different regions. The estate and its vineyard’s sit in a lovely spot within a bend of the river Ebro, North West of Logrono in the Rioja Alavasa sub region. They are protected from the north by the Cerro de la Mesa hill which creates a unique microclimate for the vineyards. The vines are old bush vines and some are over 60 years old. The wines are truly spectacular and amongst the regions finest.
