This is a terroir with a great reputation (referred to in archives dating back as far as 1328). The Kaefferkopf vineyard is one of the most renowned Grands Crus in Alsace. The clay calcareous sandstone soil gives the wine plenty of body, strength and an individual structure. The nose offers a great deal of purity, mineral character and vegetal notes. The finish is both full-bodied and intense. It's a keeper. Will age beautifully for years to come.
We came across Meyer Fonne at the start of the year when searching for a new Alsace producer. Normally, when we try an estate's wines, we will like two or three of their wines, but we were confidently blown away by Meyer Fonne and ALL of their wines. We believe that Félix Meyer produces some of the best wines in Alsace. From his base in Katzenthal, Felix produces concentrated, pure and detailed wines totally reflective of their varied terroirs. Blending is key to Meyer Fonne and Felix has the blending of the region's grape varieities down to a fine art!
The Domaine was founded in the late 1800’s by Felix Meyer and is still run by Felix’s great grandson, also Felix. The domaine now covers 12 hectares over 7 communes, namely Katzenthal, Ammerschwihr, Ingersheim, Riquewihr, Kientzheim, Colmar and Bennwihr. Within this is a great diversity of soil types and exposure which suits different grape varieties and is one of France’s greatest examples of terrior. The domaine is organic in everything but name and the wines really speak for themselves. They all possess a delicacy and complexity which is unique to the area. We hugely recommend trying them.
