Chablis 1er Cru Vaucoupin Gilbert Picq comes from a 1.5 acre parcel within this rather overlooked premier cru. It is a voluptuous wine that needs a little time to fuller open up but when it does, you are fully rewarded with tropical fruit, creamy toffee and sweet spice all sitting on top of that classic racy, mineral Chablis tang. It is an exotic treat.
Brothers Didier and Pascal Picq (sons of Gilbert), run this high quality 13 hectare estate which is based in the small village of Chichée, 3km south of the town of Chablis. Didier is the winemaker and Pascal takes care of the vineyards. They are working towards gaining organic certification with the use of sulphur kept to a minimum and only natural yeasts used. They use no oak, with all fermentation and ageing carried out in stainless steel. Their wines have always impressed us, age gracefully in bottle and offer an opulent style that still retains freshness and characteristic minerality.
