Tempranillo is the grape most commonly associated with the Rioja region but terrific examples can be found in other, less well known areas of Spain. Rayen Tempranillo from the Tierra de Castilla is one such example and delivers amazing value for money. Intense ruby red in colour, there are aromas of ripe fruit combined and smoky hints. In the mouth it is soft, sweet, fleshy and very flavourful. The wine is un-oaked and is all about pure fruit. It's the perfect accompaniment to grilled or barbecued meat and strong cheeses.
